Welcome to Year One and Two

Hello! Welcome back to Year One and Two. I hope you are as excited for the year ahead as I am. The Christmas holiday was a well deserved break for all of the children that was filled with magic and wonder and now we are back at school the focus is on learning again. This year we continue to have lots of exploring, learning and fun planned as well as meaningful learning! My specialism is Science, so I hope that by the end of the year all of the children will be as enthused about Science as I am.

This half term, our topic is 'What are farms?' where we will be focusing on the book 'What the Ladybird Heard' by Julia Donaldson in English, Animals in Science and the natural forest environment in our foundation subjects.

We are joined in English and Maths by our wonderful Teaching Assistant Mrs. Tomlinson. Together we make up the Year One and Two team.

If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact me and if you think your concern requires a longer conversation please contact the office so that we can arrange an appropriate time.

Kind regards,

Mr. A. Coker

Our aim is that, by the end of the year, children will be condfident readers. To do this, we ask that children are read with at least four times a week at home. This could be: reading a story to your children; taking it in turns to read a story with your children; or your child reading one of the Read Write Inc to you. The Read Write Inc books are read with the children in class during phonics session and therefore the children should already be able to read them. We send these books home for your child to show you how much their reading is improving. We will change books every three days, so we ask that if you have been reading at home they go back into bookbags ready for school.

A list of spellings for the half term is available from this class page for you to practise with your child at home. There will not be a weekly spelling test, however the words to be practised are important for your child to learn. This practice is also an opportunity for you to support your child with their handwriting.

As we enter the Spring term and have finished our topic on Multiplication, Year Two children will have access to TimesTable Rockstars to support them to learn them ready for their SATs.

P.E. will be on a Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure your child has full P.E. kit with them during the entire week which can be taken home on weekends to wash.

Behaviours and Attitudes

In Year One and Two, our classroom rules our Ready, Respectful and Safe. The children are regularly reminded of these expectations in all areas of school. We are working with the children to make them responsible citizens who respect the views of others. During class time, we encourage the children to be resilient in their approach to their work and to cooperate with the others in their class.
